Rameswaram - place where pramatma meets jivatma!!

Rameswaram!!

The word "Rameswaram" itself is a combination of  two tatavas Ram with Eshwar! Eshwar means shiv, your utlimate consciousness. According to scriptures, with the advise of sages, seventh avatar of Lord vishnu  King Rama along with Lakshmana and his wife sita formed a Linga at the seashore for praying to the lord shiva asking him to forgive for his act of killing Brahmin king ( Brahmanhatya). King Ravana was not only a Brahmin as per his origin, he was true scholar, learnt and super devotee of Lord Shiva.

Acts performed for righteous thing are never wrong, but then too praying to divine for forgiveness is the most superior virtue of any human, thats why king Rama is called " Purshottam" ( superior man)

If you see, most of us feels that Ramayana is a mythology, but if you see the evidences across India and Srilanka no one can deny the facts and existence of entire Ramayana. Every incidence in Ramayan ends up teaching you the way of life.

Rameswaram, is a small little island at the south east tip of our country. Beautiful village with golden sand across the roads with small houses, hotels and restaurants around. Rameswaram has many things to explore as this is the place where the last phase of Ramayana took place. The most important place of Rameswaram is Rameswaram temple. It is located at one end of the seashore. Its one of the beautiful  temple with wide range of architectural beauty showing Indian rich heritage and culture.

The day I visited the temple, it was during the late evening hours. there are two entrances to the temple called Gopuras! The seaside entrance I opted for, post security check, it was one of the magnificient walk through the temple premises I have ever done in my lifetime. The pillars, the colour combinations, everything will give you the feel of something special. The Ramanathaswamy temple and the town are considered holy pilgrimage site for both the sects Shaiva ( followers of Shiva) and Vaishnavas ( followers of Vishnu). As per my understanding, there is no difference between both of them, they are one and the same, without shiva, body is shav ( corpse) and without vishnu, shiv can't be achieved. Its the union of both reveals you the true self of yours. Pranam to the divine for giving such wonderful device called body through which he shows his presence on every walk of life.

Rameswaram is one of the Char Dhams defined by Adi Shankaracharya in our Bharat Varsh. The other three are Kedarnath  - Shiva ( Uttaranchal), Dwarka - Vishnu/Krishna ( Gujarat), Jagannath puri - Vishnu ( Orrisa). If you see, these  four temples are at the four corner of our Bharat varsh. Our logical mind would say why to visit these places , but the truth is that you never make choices in spirituality, the choices are defined by the divine, he will decide where you have to reach to attain the salvation.

Post my walk through the temple, I happen to enter in the main core area where the shiv linga exists. It is the most powerful place if you are sensitive enough to receive it. Shiva would take you to the depth and make you realize who you are, there is no place for anything in front of him apart from your own core existence. That is what we call "Vairagya state" , in this state you would be completely absorbed to the divine existence and loose the interest in worldly affairs. The truth is that your mind stops communicating with your soul and you become one with  pramatma!

When I saw people offering many things to the linga, it surprised me to the core. The divine who has given you this existence itself, why you need to make him happy again, he loves everyone, he needs only your unconditional love and attention, rest everything would fall in place. He knows everything, he knows you from the bottom of his heart, he only expects you to be true to yourself. Nothing is hidden from him, whatever you have done in your life he is completely aware, so stop luring him and surrender him to the fullest..

The Shiv linga itself is inside the core temple and it is around 10 feet away  from the devotees kept under the natural lights ( Lightened lamps). All of the temples in south have maintained this system for the purity of the environment which one needs to invoke the deity. The complete surrounding of core temple is full of small deities. Parvati temple is next to shivlinga. Its powerful too. If you visit shiv temple normally you will find people having "ash" putting on forehead and when one visits any devi temple, you will find "red kumkum" ( powder made of saffron and turmeric) on the foreheads. Ash depicts body is temporary and soul is ultimate, while kumkum depicts energy required to feel the soul, the true consciouness.

On this note, I would like to tell you one small story, more than 1000 years back, when Adi Shankaracharya was meditating in Kashi, he fall sick, so sick that he was not able to move himself. One day Narda took form of Rishi and met him, he said you are worshipping the true consiciouness, but you are not praying to that energy who will show you that path. Adi Shankaracharya realised that without energy/prakruti nothing can happen, thats why you see Devi worship is more important in our culture. Feminine energy is more stronger than anything. For our existence, she is the only way. Its said that child's mom tells child his/her father name. In the same way, you can only reach to the true consciousness through praying to the energy.

Rameswaram is the place where one should visit in a lifetime. There are some 64 teerthas where you need to take bath and move towards divine darshan. The most important of those is Agni Theertham , the sea ( Bay of Bengal), where Jaatayu had fallen down while fighting with King Raavana.

But the truth is that in Shiva tenmple you dont need to purify yourself, you are already in a big pit. The mud will only go when you start understanding yourself as a true consciousness.
