Suchindram - Spiritual treasure of Kanyakumari!!

Suchindram!!

Namaskar!!

I would like to introduce one more gem for spiritual seekers, Thanumalayan Temple, Its a huge temple located in a  town called " Suchindram' in Kanyakumari district. Before visiting this temple, I was not much aware of its existence , I think its because of my good deeds in past life, I was given this surprise by divine. We were driving pass kanyakumari towards trivandrum, where the chauffeur surprisingly connected us and told that we are going towards Suchindram temple. I was not much aware of where we all are heading too, I thought it might be one of those rural temples in smaller villages. But, once I entered in the vicinity of Suchindram, I got to know that something bigger is going to happen. Temple is around 17 kms from kanyakumari and 8 kms from Nagercoil city.

The first thing I noticed was the two big chariots in wooden carvings at the entrance of the temple, huge, fantastic art work and big wheels. Gradually, moving towards the entrance of this huge temple,  I have to enter with bare body. You can feel the fragrance of Tulsi  all around. The temple premises are so huge that it has around 30 shrines of different deities. Its a hidden gem truly, not much crowded!

"Thanumalayan" Shiva Lingam is the main deity of this temple. Sthanu or Thanu means Shiva, Mal means Vishnu and Ayan means Brahma, All the three exists in the form of Lingam at this place! The legendary story behind this is of Devi Anusaya, wife of Rishi Atri. One day all of  the three gods came to test the purity of her existence. They came and ask her for food to eat, but on one clause, she should serve the food without clothes. Anusaya was divine in herself, she prayed and all these three gods were made in the form of babies!! Thats the devi power!! Post this, all wives of these gods prayed her to get them into there true forms! All the three gods then blessed her with their powers and decided to stay there in the form of lingam! That's the place Thanumalayan Temple for you..

Such is the purity of this temple and its existence.  This temple has been reconstructed in 17th century , while the old temple is said to be formed in 9th century  and was under the control of community Nambudiri brahmins since then, imagine temple has its existence for almost more than 1000 years back .There are three major deities within the temple area 1) Thanumalayan , 2) Vishnu temple and 3) standing Anjaneya Statue..

The surroundings of lingam are enchanting and will pierce you through your heart. Silence is the only thing one can feel after entering into the core area, it will calm down all your thoughts and it will create a void which you can feel if your conscious enough. This void or emptiness is what  Shiva is all about, Shiva means which not! Have you ever thought of sunlight and darkness together, only because light is there, you won’t see darkness, the truth is that darkness is everywhere , start loving it ! All the fears of your life would be vanished. Similarly, only because you have a machine called body, you have everything around it, start seeing it beyond, life wont be the same.

Life is nothing more than an empty vessel , we all fill up with our falsifying desires and then that vessel starts making noise, this noise will then push you further from understanding the true nature of it.I insist everyone to fill it up with divine love and see the way life treats you..

Besides shivlinga you will also find Vishnu temple where all tulsi leaves are offered.

Remember, where shiv is there, Vishnu has to be there, or else the life cycle will not exists. So while moving around the temple, I happened to stop at the Anjaneya statue , so huge that the local priests were using wooden stairs for applying butter on his forehead. Lord Hanuman is Shiv Tatava, if you see as I said earlier where Shiv exists, Vishnu would be always there along with him. Meditating on Anjaneya would give you the strength to face any challenges in your bodily life. In Ramayana too, Shiv in the form of Anjaneya supported lord Rama to win over Ravana. The conclusion, where body exist, soul has to be there!!

Once Nandi asked lord Shiva , if the entire universe meditates on you, whose meditation you do! Lord Shiva replied “Narayana” Nandi got surprised, he asked why ? Lord Shiva replied beautifully, he said it’s easy to meditate and live life staying away from prapancha ( our existence or daily rituals) but it’s way difficult to meditate staying in prapancha. That’s what Narayana does! The most difficult way! That’s why lord Krishna avatar of lord Vishnu is the super soul, staying in everything and staying apart!

For understanding our temples, the best way is to spend time within premises for longer hours. No hurry no rush! Have you ever asked this question to yourself, Why do we visit temples, or per say mosque, churches or any other religious places. To get what? Why are we always in hurry? Is it a hotel , bank or any other counter, where you put money or give some offerings and your desires are fulfilled. I have seen such tendencies across all the religious places in India, divine needs nothing! Needs your devotion and attention! Exactly the same thing we all forget to give. Remember, desires are never ending. Lets start feeling the super consciousness within us and stop getting into transactional bondings!

If you  remember we all set up Satyanarayan Pooja  ( Satyanarayan is Lord Vishnu) in our houses for
our well being , for our new work and on all auspicious occasions; surprisingly every priest who narrates the stories of satyanarayana, every story ends on something wrong will happen if we don’t worship him properly, absolutely wrong way of devotion! Are we creating god lovers or god fearers in the society? God doesn’t know all this, he is beyond everything! To understand him,you have to spend time with yourself first, things will unfold for sure.

Thanumalayan temple I would recommend for all the spiritual seekers  to visit and request everyone to spend good quality time around within the temple.

Om namah Shivaya!!
